How to sell on ebay

The coolest part about this internet phenomena was that a museum recognized it as a work of art and bought his site. That’s when I heard about the project, so I was interested to see what exactly it was he was able to sell especially now that I’ve ventured into ebay selling myself. It struck me that some of the things were bought simply because he had become a cult icon and people were following his journey on his site. His comments about the item were a personal narrative in itself.

The concept of selling everything he owned was not altogether unusual and is often a right of passage for transformation. It was the ebay component and the added embelishment of taking a road trip to visit his belongings in their new owners’ homes that made it a true internet experience. It was also a commentary about how our stuff gets in the way of our being free to envision our life differently or change it to begin with. I’ve had plenty of clients in this same situation.

There were a number of fun concepts that he offered for sale like a jar that proclaimed to contain the soul of a fellow artist who was selling his soul like most people do, for the money. I also liked that he ended up not moving after all because the whole experience had made him realize that he didn’t need to live in a big city to feel connected to stimulating experience. That was very Wizard of Oz.

I posted an essay today called The Secret Life of a Content Provider about how the synergy of the internet especially here on flickr has become a vital part of my creative process.

How to sell on eBay like a Power Seller

OK, so eBay starts to work for you, and you see your first sales. Congratulations! Now the next question arises: how can I sell on eBay like a Power Seller? Well, why don’t we hear directly from them? Let us see what four tips they give us to make huge profits selling products on ebay…

1. An image is worth a thousand words: Take photos of your item to clearly show the condition of it, and any damage or unusual aspects of it. Many Power Sellers use up to 20 photos for one single item. Ask yourself how many are necessary for your item, and also consider using the gallery option so the image will appear within the search listings.

2. Open an ebay store: this is a necessary step for anyone medium sized seller. You will benefit for cheaper and longer listings within your shop as well as you will also be able to cross-promote your products easily, send out newsletters and establish a trusted brand for your listings. Of course, as your listings will appear in the eBay store directory you will also gain more coverage (and hopefully bids) for them.

3. Get traffic: More visitors = more sales = Power Seller status. Run a few auctions (not buy now) starting at 1p or 1c, one a day will do, just list a different item every day. These may not sell for much but it attracts traffic and buyers. Make a link to your store and ask people to click on it and they will.

4. Customer Service: Is the most important thing you should take care of in your business. Why? Because is the main source for repeated sales. A VP of marketing once said that it is far easier to keep an existing customer than it is to get a new one. Of course this means that you have to take care of your existing customer to keep him. Customer service is paramount.

One trick I've picked up is to sell old stuff to subsidize buying new stuff. I even figured out how to make almost $ 300 in profit switching iPhones from AT&T to Verizon when the Verizon iPhone 4 was originally announced. But listing items on eBay and

I like this book a lot! It is ironic that it’s one of my favorite possessions. Neat to find it in a search about boycotting eBay…
